Sparsh
Sparsh (Sanskrit for touch)
In South Indian Classical dance of Bharatanatyam, there is a lack of physical touch. Dancers may hold hands, or tap on another dancers’ shoulder very briefly. Various emotions may be conveyed through gestures, body language and facial expressions. Yet, bodily contact is not commonly seen in traditional pieces. Influenced by Contemporary dance, contact improvisation, “Sparsh” explores the sensory aspects of touch in a traditional Bharatanatyam piece.
