Maker Workshop Series: Spiral Bodies Techniques® Essential Level with Lauren Reed

Spiral Body Techniques® (SBT) is the framework for teaching movement and dance developed by choreographer Molly Shanahan. The SBT studio class is geared to advanced and intermediate/advanced dancers (noting that movers of all levels are welcome to take at their own pace, including enthusiastic beginners) interested in cultivating a deeper capacity to spontaneously access the multiplicity of options available at any given dancing movement, and to navigate rapidly changing relationships to space formed through image, clarity of intent, and adaptability. SBT emphasizes the intrinsic system of fluidity, spirals, undulation, and curve that allow a dancer/mover to navigate complex movement patterns—whether learned/rehearsed or improvised—with ease, safety, and joy. We will start with phrases that involve laying and rolling on the floor, progressing towards a standing and traveling phrase towards the end of class. Please dress in warm clothes that feel comfortable to you!

Lauren Reed graduated from Butler University with a BFA in Dance Performance. Aside from performing and choreographing, she has taught various styles in dance studios, schools, and after school programs for over 10 years. Lauren is an enthusiastic educator who values imagination, presence, and play; she believes that dance is a thrilling way for children and adults alike to become more fully human. Lauren continues to tune her teaching values with ongoing training; she holds certifications in IMAGE TECH for Dancers™, Spiral Body Techniques®, and Danscend. Lauren is a professional grant writer and arts administrator, and has been running a youth development program called Teen Leaders Club since 2013.

Antarabhava at Elevate Chicago Dance 2022

See an excerpt of Kinnari Vora’s production, Antarabhava which will be presented as part of Elevate Chicago Dance 2022 Festival’s Closing and Lab Artists Celebration!

Antarabhava is a meditation on mortality, the journey of consciousness and impermanence. What can we learn from our ancestors, nature, different religious, cultural and societal practices to bring acceptance, preparedness, and celebration to the death transition? What must we do to be at peace with ourselves so that we may live presently and die gracefully? We propose to initiate a dialogue about alternative ways of approaching aging, death, and end-of-life care in our society.

The closing party for the Elevate Chicago Dance 2022 festival will include...

  • Performance of “Antarabhava” (excerpt-in-progress) by 2022 Lab Artist, Kinnari Vora / Ishti Collective at 6:30PM

Prakriti II at Mandala Makers Festival

  • Indian Boundary Park Nature Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Prakriti II: We Are Here explores how we as individuals and as a collective, persist and move forward in the current polarized socio-political world. We are guided by hope and trust in humanity that we can do better; we deserve better than the anxiousness and rage caused by the divisiveness. Maybe we can find ways to channel our differences in a way that doesn’t destroy us. We recognize that it requires on-going work and there may not be one particular or any resolution. We look inwards to pause and heal, reach for grounding strength, listen and open our minds, shed our egos, bring brevity and find joy in little things and seek empathy and kindness.

Ishti is thrilled to share excerpts of Prakriti II as a site specific performance at the Nature Center at Indian Boundary Park. Prakriti I: A History of Present was initiated at Indian Boundary Park in 2018; four years later, the second installment emerges. This work is co-created by Tuli Bera and Kinnari Vora along with co-choreographers and performers Lauren Reed, Emily Loar and Ashaand Simone, music by Bob Garrett, costumes by Erika Ochoa and Kinnari Vora.

This is a FREE event! Be sure to check out all the other amazing artists and workshops happening during this festival. Click here for more information.

This presentation is partially supported by Tuli Bera’s Individual Artist Program Grant from the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs & Special Events, as well as a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency, a state agency through federal funds provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Prakriti II at Going Dutch Festival 2022

Prakriti II is an exploration of how we, as individuals and as a collective, sustain and move forward in the current socio-political polarized world. We are guided by hope and trust in humanity that we can do better; we deserve better than the anxiousness and rage caused by the divisiveness. Maybe we can find ways to channel these differences in a way that doesn't destroy us. We recognize that it requires on-going work and there may not be one particular or any resolution. We explore ways to pause and heal, reach for grounding strength, listen and open our minds, shed our egos, bring brevity and find joy in little things and seek empathy and kindness.
